Five Common Mistakes to Avoid on a First Trip to Hangzhou

This short video from the channel China Travel with Frida lists five common mistakes first-time visitors to Hangzhou should avoid. Among them: don't walk the entire 14-kilometre loop around West Lake, and instead take the traditional water bus; skip the crowds under Leifeng Pagoda and go to Changqiao Park at sunset for a reflection photo; and don't stay at Longxiangqiao, where rooms are said to be overpriced and noisy, but near Ding'an Road on Metro Line 1, described as cheaper, quieter and a ten-minute walk from the lake. Hefang Street is also called a tourist trap.

This story captures something I noticed in Shanghai too: young people treat the city almost like a shared living room.

I would love a follow-up about second-tier cities. Chengdu and Hangzhou probably have different versions of this.

The examples feel familiar even outside China. Urban life is becoming more improvised everywhere.

I like that the piece does not frame this as Westernization. It feels more locally invented.

The writing around public streets becoming social spaces is especially strong.

This reminds me of weekend markets near university areas. Very accurate.
